Nx Witness for CCTV: what to check before changing software

Nx Witness can bring compatible cameras, recorded video and authorised viewers into one system. Check cameras, storage, licences and access before changing software.

Short answer

Short answer

Nx Witness is video-management software for compatible IP cameras. It uses a media server to manage recording and devices, with desktop and mobile applications for authorised people to view live or recorded video. It may help when several cameras or locations have become difficult to manage. Before recommending it, check each camera model, the server, network and storage, licence requirements, who needs access and which search features the proposed setup supports.

Start with the footage people need to find

People often ask about CCTV software when reviewing an event takes too long, cameras are spread across several apps or more than one person needs access. Begin with a practical question: what would someone need to find, from which camera, and how quickly? That answer guides camera views, picture quality, retention, permissions and the way recordings are organised.

Nx Witness is not a camera brand. It is software that can manage supported video devices, recordings and authorised viewers. Network Optix describes a media server, desktop client and mobile client as parts of the system. The experience still depends on the cameras, network, server, licences, permissions and software edition installed.

Make review and access fit the people using it

A well-planned system should let the right person find a camera, move through recorded video and save relevant footage when needed. Nx Witness documentation describes timeline playback, bookmarks and motion-based search. Those tools do not make every event searchable: recording settings, detection configuration and camera capability still matter. If object or AI search is proposed, its exact integration, edition and licence need checking.

Access is a separate design decision. A household may need two phone viewers; a business may need different permissions for an owner, manager and service technician. Agree who can view live footage, review recordings, export evidence and change settings. Remote access should be configured and tested for the chosen system, not described as a guarantee that footage is private or always reachable.

Check cameras and recording before promising a changeover

Network Optix maintains a supported-device list and cautions that functions can vary by camera model. Receiving a video stream does not prove that audio, inputs, analytics or other functions will carry across unchanged. Record each model and firmware version, then test the functions in the proposed scope.

The server and storage plan matters as much as the viewing app. Work out the number of cameras, required picture quality, retention period, network capacity and where recordings will live. Confirm licences and edition-specific features for the actual proposal. A convenient demonstration still needs a sensible maintenance and handover plan.

What a CCTV software review should cover

The right outcome might be keeping existing software, improving its configuration or planning a staged replacement. Nx Witness should be recommended only if the assessed system and a current, supportable offer make it a suitable fit.

  • Camera and recorder models, firmware and current recording arrangements.
  • Which cameras need live viewing, recording, search or export.
  • The number of sites and people, with a clear access and permissions plan.
  • Network, server, storage and power conditions at the property.
  • Model-specific compatibility, licence and software-edition checks.
  • A demonstration of the agreed search and export tasks before handover.
