Does Control4 still work if the internet goes down?
Does Control4 work without internet? Learn what can continue locally, what needs cloud access and how power and network design affect your home.
Short answer
Short answer
Usually, many Control4 functions can continue during an internet outage if the home still has power and its controller, local network and connected devices are working. Local keypads, remotes and programmed actions may still work. Remote access, streaming, cloud notifications and other online services need an internet connection. The answer for your home depends on its equipment, programming and third-party integrations.
First, work out what has stopped
An internet outage, a local network fault and a power outage affect different parts of the home. If the internet service is down but the router, switches and controller still communicate locally, local control may continue. If the local network fails, those devices may not be able to reach each other even when the internet service itself is available.
If the power is out, the controller, network equipment and devices being controlled need suitable backup power to keep operating. A battery on one device does not power the whole system.
Control4 says its systems work locally without a subscription. Connect adds online features, including remote access. That local design does not guarantee that every connected product will work without internet: each action also depends on its own device and integration.

What may keep working locally
Wall keypads, physical buttons, remotes, touchscreens and programmed lighting or blind scenes may continue if their controller and connected devices are powered and can communicate locally. A schedule stored in the local system may also continue. A scene that starts an online music service or uses a cloud-only device can respond only in part.
For a useful answer, identify the functions that matter to your household and check how each one communicates. The brand name alone cannot tell you whether a particular driver or device needs the cloud.

What needs the internet
The subscription depends on the age of the system. Control4 says 4Sight is available for systems installed before 23 April 2024; Connect replaced it for systems installed after that date. Check the actual account and entitlement rather than assuming every home has the same service.
- Using the Control4 app while away from home needs an online path and the relevant service.
- Cloud-delivered notifications and Intercom Anywhere calls to a mobile device need connectivity.
- Internet radio, streaming music, cloud voice assistants, online account services and software downloads need their respective online services.
- Remote support and third-party products that rely on their manufacturer's cloud may be unavailable or limited.

Test the app at home and away separately
A phone on the home's Wi-Fi may be able to communicate with local equipment while the internet is out. The same phone on mobile data, away from the home, must reach the system through online services. Record which connection you used when testing, so a successful local test is not mistaken for working remote access.

Plan separately for a power outage
Local operation still needs electricity. If a function matters during a blackout, identify every part of its path: the controller, router, switches, wireless access points and the device it controls. Check which parts have backup power and how long that backup is expected to last.
NBN advises that modems and Wi-Fi routers need their own backup power during a blackout, and that an outage may last longer than a battery. Never assume an internet or mobile connection will remain available throughout a power outage.

Questions to ask about your own system
- Which lights, blinds, audio and other important functions can operate entirely within the home?
- Which scenes include a streaming service, cloud-connected device or online notification?
- Does the Control4 app work on local Wi-Fi, on mobile data away from home, or both?
- Which parts have backup power, and what happens when the battery runs out?
- Does your system use Connect, legacy 4Sight or another online service?
