A home network planned for the systems you rely on

A dependable connection supports the cameras, security, music, television and controls around your property. NorthTech looks at the wired and wireless network behind those systems, then explains what may need attention.

If coverage is patchy or you are planning more connected equipment, start with what is installed and where it needs to work. We do not assume a new router or a faster internet plan will solve every problem.

Ask about your network

Three parts of a useful network plan

  • Coverage where people use it

A router in one room may not reach the study, bedrooms, outdoor areas or a separate building equally well. The layout and building materials matter more than a promise printed on a box.

  • Wired connections for fixed equipment

Cameras, recorders, access points and other fixed devices may need a planned cable route, power and a suitable equipment location. We check what is already available before proposing new work.

  • Equipment that can be looked after

The network includes more than Wi-Fi. Its router, switches, access points, cabling and internet service all affect the result, so a useful plan identifies the source of a problem rather than swapping equipment blindly.

Start with the cause, then choose the work

Step 1

Understand the property

Tell us where the connection drops, which rooms and outdoor areas matter, and which security, entertainment or smart-home systems use the network.

Step 2

Check what is installed

The existing router, Wi-Fi access points, switches, cables and equipment locations show what can be retained and where there may be a bottleneck.

Step 3

Explain a practical design

A useful recommendation may be better placement, an additional access point, a wired run or a wider network redesign. The scope depends on the building and the equipment already there.

Cabling and fixed electrical work need the appropriately licensed trades. The final design and work scope are confirmed after the property and existing equipment have been reviewed.

Common home-network questions

Will a faster internet plan fix weak Wi-Fi in my home?
Not always. The internet connection and the Wi-Fi inside the property are different parts of the path. Weak signal, placement, building materials or a busy network can still cause problems on a faster plan. The cause should be checked before you pay for a change.
Does every device need a new cable?
No. Some devices work well over a planned wireless network, while fixed equipment such as cameras and access points often benefits from cabling. We look at the exact devices, the building and the existing runs before recommending work.
Can an existing network be improved instead of replaced?
Possibly. The condition and age of the equipment, available access and the problem you want solved determine what is worth keeping. An assessment can separate a coverage problem from a failing device or an internet-service issue.
Can my cameras and smart-home controls share the same network?
They can be planned as parts of one property network, but the design must account for each system's connection, security and reliability needs. NorthTech checks the installed equipment and its supported setup before recommending how it should be connected.

Tell us where the network lets you down

Describe the rooms or devices affected and any equipment you already have. We will review the details and explain a sensible next step.
