Commercial audio · Melbourne

Sound systems for cafés, restaurants and bars in Melbourne.

The right background music, at the right volume, in every part of your venue. We design and install Episode commercial audio — zoned so the bar, the dining room and the courtyard each get their own, with paging when you need it — and look after it remotely, so it keeps playing through every service.

Sound familiar?

Music should set the mood, not become a job.

Most cafés, restaurants and pubs we walk into have the same four problems with their background music. Each one has a straightforward fix.

  • Loud by the speaker, silent by the windowEven sound, every table

More speakers at lower volume, spread across the ceiling, so no one shouts and no one sits in silence.

  • One playlist, one volume, everywhereA zone for every area

Upbeat at the bar, relaxed in the dining room, quiet in the bathrooms — each area set on its own.

  • Someone’s phone, someone’s BluetoothSimple wall controls for staff

A wall plate in each area to pick the music and set the volume. Nothing to pair, and limits you set.

  • Silence on a Saturday nightFixed before you notice

Your system reports to us through OvrC. Most faults are sorted remotely, without a call-out.

Built around your venue

A sound system for every kind of venue.

A café, a restaurant, a pub and a beer garden each need something different. Choose the one most like yours to see how we’d approach it.

Cafés

Hard floors, high ceilings and a coffee machine that never stops. We keep the music clear without fighting the grinder, and quieter near the tables where people come to talk.

  • Morning and afternoon scenes that switch on and off with your opening hours.
  • A quieter zone for the window seats and laptop crowd.
  • Speakers chosen for hard rooms, so concrete and glass don’t make it harsh.

Try it

A day in your venue, looked after automatically.

Move through the day and watch each area change on its own. Turn on a full house, or make an announcement, and see what the system does.

At 7 am the system starts the breakfast scene by itself. The bar stays off until it opens. No one has to remember to turn the music on.

What we install

Episode business audio, sized to your venue.

Episode is made for commercial spaces — amplifiers with sound tuning built in, speakers for ceilings, high ceilings and outdoors, and wall controls for staff. Tell us about your venue and we’ll show you where we’d start.

Where we’d start

Small venue

Episode MixAmp

Best for: cafés, salons and small bars

An amplifier with its own mixer and sound tuning, in a half-width box. Two music sources to two areas, plus a microphone.

  • Paging microphone input. Music dips automatically while you speak.
  • Pre-recorded messages from a single button — “we close in 15 minutes”.
  • 160 or 350 watts per channel, monitored with OvrC.

Medium venue

Amplifier + sound processor

Best for: restaurants with a bar and courtyard

A four- or eight-channel Episode amplifier paired with a processor that sends any source to any area, each tuned for its room.

  • Up to four areas, each with its own music and volume.
  • Power shared between channels, so a busy courtyard can borrow what it needs.
  • Wall controls for staff, with the limits you choose.

Large venue

Episode Business Music Solution

Best for: pubs, multi-room venues and function spaces

The full system: up to sixteen sources and eight areas, with wall plates, a Bluetooth input for guests and noise sensors.

  • Noise sensors that lift the music as the room fills and ease it back as it empties.
  • Bluetooth and microphone wall plates for DJs, speeches and trivia night.
  • Runs on its own — no extra control system needed, and Control4 can be added later.

2 areas and one source: a MixAmp covers it with room to spare. Every venue is different — we confirm it on the site visit.

Why commercial speakers

Commercial speakers, built for big rooms.

Home speakers are wired in small groups, so a big room runs out of amplifier long before it runs out of ceiling. Commercial speakers use a system called 70-volt (a way of sending sound down one long cable to many speakers at once). That means more speakers, each playing quieter, for sound that’s even from wall to wall.

Episode amplifiers do both, so we can keep good speakers you already have.

Two to four speakers per channel. Add more and the amplifier struggles, so the far tables go quiet.

OvrC

Remote monitoring with OvrC

If the music stops, we already know.

Every system we install is connected to OvrC (pronounced “oversee”), a secure service that lets NorthTech watch your equipment and fix most problems over the internet. You keep trading. We sort it out.

Illustration of what we see — not a real customer.

Drawn in NorthTech’s colours to explain the idea; the real OvrC screens are for our technicians.

  1. 7:42:10 pmAmplifier stops responding

A power hiccup leaves the amplifier frozen. The dining room goes quiet.

  2. 7:42:40 pmNorthTech is alerted

OvrC flags it straight away. Our technician sees exactly which device, at which venue.

  3. 7:44:05 pmRestarted remotely

We restart it over the internet. No call to us, no ladder, no one leaving the floor.

  4. 7:45:00 pmMusic back on

Under three minutes, start to finish. We send you a note so you know what happened.

  • Alerts the moment something drops offNot when a staff member finally notices and calls.
  • Restarts from anywhereMost faults are a restart. We do it remotely, often before you notice.
  • Changes without a visitNew opening hours, louder Friday nights, a new playlist time — adjusted from our office.
  • A visit with the answerIf we do need to come, we already know what’s wrong and bring the right part.

Common questions from venue owners

Can I have different music in the bar and the dining room?
Yes. Each area is its own zone with its own source and volume. Up-tempo in the bar, something quieter in the dining room, and nothing at all in the kitchen if you like.
How much does a sound system for a café or restaurant cost?
It depends mostly on how many separate areas you have and how many speakers each one needs. A single-area café system is a modest job; a pub with a bar, dining room, sports area and beer garden is a bigger one. After a free site visit we give you a fixed price in writing, so there are no surprises.
Do I need a music licence to play music in my café or restaurant?
Yes. In Australia, playing recorded music in a business generally needs a licence, usually from OneMusic Australia, and a personal Spotify or Apple Music account isn’t licensed for business use. Business music services are. We can connect whichever service you choose.
What happens if the music stops during service?
Your system is connected to OvrC, so NorthTech is alerted when a piece of equipment drops off. Most problems are fixed remotely, often before you’ve noticed. If something needs a visit, we already know what it is before we arrive.
Can staff change the music without a phone or a password?
Yes. A small wall plate in each area lets staff choose the source and set the volume. We can lock out the sources and volume levels you don’t want changed.
Will the installation disrupt trading?
We plan around your trading hours. Most cabling and speaker work is done before opening, after close or on your closed day.
Can I make announcements or page the kitchen?
Yes. A paging microphone can talk to one area or all of them, and the music automatically drops while you speak and comes back up afterwards.
Can you work with the speakers I already have?
Often, yes. Episode amplifiers drive both 70-volt commercial speakers and ordinary 8-ohm speakers. We’ll test what’s there and tell you honestly what’s worth keeping.
Do you install commercial audio across Melbourne?
Yes. NorthTech is based in Thomastown and designs, installs and supports sound systems for cafés, restaurants, bars, pubs and other businesses across Melbourne, with a focus on the inner north and northern suburbs.
