A conventional camera is often most useful after an event. It records faces, vehicles and movement so there is evidence to review. That matters, but it does not always change what is happening at the property in the moment.

Active deterrence adds an immediate, visible response. The person outside no longer has to wonder whether the camera is live or whether anybody has noticed them. The property itself makes that clear.

Luma is NorthTech’s first CCTV choice for homes with Control4, or homes being planned around it. Lighting and audio make detection unmistakable

When a Luma camera detects a person in a defined area, Control4 can switch on selected exterior lights and play a spoken announcement through connected speakers. Inside, televisions or Control4 touchscreens can show the relevant cameras so the people at home can understand what caused the response.

The combination matters. Light removes the cover of darkness. A clear spoken warning tells the person that the response is deliberate. Together they create the unmistakable feeling that the property is alert and the person has been seen.

• Switch on the lights that cover the driveway, side path, entrance or yard involved.
• Play a calm, direct warning through speakers that can be heard in that area.
• Show the relevant camera views on selected screens inside the home.
• Keep the recording and notification so the event can still be reviewed afterwards.

NorthTech has seen unwanted visitors approach a property and stop as soon as the lighting changed and the speaker announcement made it clear they had been detected. Instead of continuing towards the house or testing a door, they turned away.

No camera can promise that every person will react the same way. Good security is always layered. What active deterrence changes is the timing: the system can challenge the behaviour before the only thing left to do is review the footage.

The design decides whether it works well

An effective response should be deliberate, not noisy. NorthTech positions each camera around the real approach to the property, defines the detection area and agrees what should happen at different times. That helps the system respond to the right movement without making every passer-by or family arrival an event.

• Cover the approach early enough to respond before somebody reaches a door or window.
• Set useful detection areas and schedules for the way the property is actually used.
• Choose lighting and speaker zones that reach the area without disturbing the whole neighbourhood.
• Use short, unambiguous announcements and test the complete sequence at the property.
