Master key systems
The right key access for the right people.
A master key system lets different keys open different groups of locks, while an authorised master key can open more. NorthTech plans systems around the people, doors and responsibilities in your building.
We still offer master key and restricted-key systems. Planned design, installation and handover are arranged through our office, Monday to Friday, 8am–6pm, and Saturday, 8am–12pm; urgent locksmith callouts remain available 24/7.

What we do
One considered system, not a growing ring of keys.
A good key hierarchy keeps everyday access practical and makes it clear who can enter each area. It also gives the property owner a way to manage keys when people or tenancies change.
Map doors and access levels
We start with each door and role: common areas, private rooms, management access and any areas that need a separate key group.
Choose compatible hardware
The locks and cylinders need to suit the doors and the planned key hierarchy. We check what can be retained and what should change.
Control key issue
Restricted-key arrangements can require an authorised process for obtaining additional keys. We explain the chosen system's rules and keep the authorisation process clear.
Install, test and hand over
After installation, the key groups are tested and the people responsible for the system are shown how the access plan works and how to request changes.
A considered approach
Designed for change as well as today.
A system that works for today's staff or residents must also be manageable when someone leaves, a tenancy changes or another area is added. We plan the hierarchy with those changes in mind.
Master keys are only one part of an access plan. For some doors, an intercom or electronic access control may be more appropriate; we can discuss how the systems fit together without forcing every door into the same solution.
Common questions
- What is a master key system?
- It is a planned arrangement of locks and keys. Some keys open only assigned doors, while authorised master keys open a wider group. The exact hierarchy is designed for the property.
- Are master keys the same as restricted keys?
- No. A master key describes what a key can open within the system. A restricted-key arrangement controls how additional keys are requested and supplied. A system can use both ideas.
- Can an existing building be converted?
- Often, but it depends on the existing locks, doors and the access plan you need. We inspect the hardware before recommending what can be retained or replaced.
Planning access across several doors?
Tell us who needs access, to which areas, and what locks are already installed. We will help map a workable key system.
