How to add a family member to your Control4 system

Give each person their own secure Control4 login. Invite a family member, choose the right role and remove access when it is no longer needed.

Short answer

Short answer

If your Control4 system runs OS 3.4 or later and your login has Admin access, open the Control4 app, go to Settings and then Manage Users, add the person’s name and email address, choose Standard or Admin, and send the invitation. They accept the email and create their own password, so you never need to share yours.

Before you invite anyone

Control4 added in-app user management in OS 3.4. You need to be signed in with an Admin account to invite or edit another user. Have the family member’s own email address ready so their access stays separate from yours.

If Manage Users is missing, your system may be on an earlier version or your account may have Standard access. NorthTech can check the system version and confirm who holds Admin access without changing anything first.

  • Use one login for each person rather than sharing the main account.
  • Ask the person to check that you have their current email address.
  • Keep your owner or Admin password private.

Invite a family member from the Control4 app

The labels can move slightly between app versions, but the user-management screen sits within Settings.

  1. Open the Control4 app and make sure you are connected to the correct home.
  2. Open Settings, then choose Account and Manage Users. Some versions show this as Users.
  3. Choose Add User or the plus button.
  4. Enter the person’s name and email address.
  5. Choose Standard or Admin access. Standard is the right starting point for most family members.
  6. Send the invitation.
  7. Ask the person to open the Control4 email, accept the invitation and create their own password before signing in to the app.

Choose Standard or Admin access

A Standard user gets basic access to use the Control4 system. An Admin has broader account control, including the ability to invite and edit other users and update property details. Give Admin access only to someone who should manage the home’s Control4 account, not merely use the lights, audio, climate or other connected systems.

What each person can operate also depends on how the Control4 project at your property has been designed. If somebody needs more specific access, such as a separate area of the home or a restricted security function, ask NorthTech to check the programming rather than assuming the account role will do it.

If the invitation does not arrive

  • Check the spam, junk and promotions folders for an email from Control4.
  • Confirm the email address in Manage Users has no spelling mistake.
  • Send a fresh invitation if the original link has expired.
  • If the person already has a Control4 login, make sure they accept the invitation using that same email address.

Remove access when circumstances change

Return to Manage Users, open the person’s profile and remove or disable their access. Do this promptly when somebody moves out or no longer needs control of the property.

Removing a Control4 app user does not automatically remove an alarm PIN, a door-lock code, a gate remote or access held in another app. Review those separately. NorthTech can help identify every access method linked to the property if you are unsure.

When NorthTech should help

Lodge a Support Request if you cannot see Manage Users, have lost the Admin login, need different access for separate parts of the property, or want to make sure a former resident no longer has any way in. We can check the Control4 account and the connected security equipment together instead of treating one login as the whole answer.
