Locksmith advice

Choosing a locksmith starts with the right questions.

A locksmith may be helping with an urgent lockout, a single damaged lock or the access plan for an entire property. Knowing what to ask helps you choose work that solves the real problem.

NorthTech offers 24/7 locksmith callouts for urgent issues. For a planned review, our office is open Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm. This guide explains the decisions worth discussing before work begins.

24/7 locksmith callouts

For an urgent lock or access problem, call us at any hour. We will discuss the situation and attendance.

Office hours

Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm, for planned work and general enquiries.

What we do

Four questions to ask before work starts.

The lowest-effort fix is not always the right long-term answer. These questions help you understand what the locksmith is proposing and why.

  • Is this urgent, and what happens next?

If a door cannot be secured or you are locked out, explain the situation by phone. Ask what the next available attendance is and what information the locksmith needs about the lock or property.

  • Can the lock be repaired or rekeyed?

A lost key does not always require a whole new lock, and a stiff lock may have a problem elsewhere in the door. Ask what can be retained, what should change and why.

  • Who needs access afterwards?

Think about family, staff, tenants and contractors. A single-door rekey may be enough; multiple roles and doors may call for a planned master key system.

  • How does it fit the rest of the security?

Locks, safes, alarms, cameras and electronic access serve different purposes. Ask how the proposed lock work fits what is already installed and what you plan to add.

A considered approach

Look beyond the key in your hand.

The door, frame, lock condition and existing key arrangement all matter. For a workplace, think about changes in staff and tenancies. For a home, consider everyone who needs safe everyday access and what happens if a key is lost.

Ask for a clear explanation of the proposed work and the key-control process. Where a particular product, warranty or building requirement matters, have the locksmith identify it for the actual door rather than assume the same answer applies everywhere.

Common questions

Should I rekey or replace a lock after losing a key?
That depends on the lock's type and condition and who may have the missing key. A locksmith should inspect it and explain whether rekeying or replacement is the more suitable option.
What if I need a locksmith outside office hours?
Ask whether callouts are available and what attendance can be offered. NorthTech's locksmith callouts are available 24/7, while our office is open Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm.
When is a master key system worth discussing?
When several people need different access across multiple doors, a planned key hierarchy can be easier to manage than unrelated locks and loose copies of keys.
